Salary: This position is not remunerated. Charity Directors can, however, submit claims for pre-agreed out-of-pocket expenses, such as travel to attend meetings.

Anam Cara Fasgadh is a Scottish charity based in Argyll, founded in 2018 to bring compassion, respite, and hope to families bereaved through the loss of a baby, child, or young person.

Through Gabriel’s Oasis, our peaceful caravan at Tralee Bay Coastal Parks on Scotland’s west coast, and the memorial events we host, our nature based nurture groups, and our Trees of Tranquillity, we have supported hundreds of families from across the UK. Our vision is to expand support through a network of safe, nurturing spaces across the country where grieving families can rest, reflect, and heal.

We are now seeking new Directors to join our Board, passionate, like-minded individuals who can help shape the next chapter of our journey.

As a Director, you will:

Guide the charity’s strategy, values, and long-term vision

Ensure good governance, transparency, and financial sustainability

Champion equality, inclusion, and best practice

Build partnerships with individuals, businesses, and organisations to grow awareness and support

Commitment: Around 4 - 6 Board meetings a year (mix of Zoom and in-person), plus our AGM and occasional events. The role is voluntary, but pre-agreed travel expenses are reimbursed.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Charity Director, Board of Directors

Unpaid position

Attend Board Meetings 4-6 times per annum (via Zoom or in person)

Attend AGM annually (via Zoom or in person)

You will play a very important role as an Anam Cara Fasgadh Director, in having independent control over, and legal responsibility for, the charity’s management and administration.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. To ensure that the charity is carrying out the purposes for which it is set up, as set out in its governing document. This includes planning what the charity will achieve, being able to explain how these activities are intended to support its purposes and how they benefit the public.

  2. To ensure that the charity complies with its governing document, charity law and any other laws which apply to Anam Cara Fasgadh.

  3. To act in the charity’s best interests, making balanced and adequately informed decisions and to avoid putting yourself in a position where your duty to Anam Cara Fasgadh conflicts with your personal interests.

  4. To act responsibly, reasonably and honestly, including ensuring that the charity’s assets are only used to support or carry out its purposes and that they comply with any restrictions on spending funds.

  5. To ensure that you support the charity in complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements.

  6. To contribute actively to the board of trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining targets and evaluating performance against these.

  7. To scrutinise board papers in advance and be a proactive and engaged member of Board meetings.

  8. To safeguard the good name and values of Anam Cara Fasgadh.

  9. To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.

  10. To ensure the financial stability of the organisation, by engaging with potential fundraisers, donors and sponsors.

  11. To protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper investment of the charity’s funds.

  12. To monitor the financial, strategic and operational performance of Anam Cara Fasgadh.

Essential Attributes:

  1. An ability to demonstrate commitment to the principles of being a Director as per OSCR guidelines.

  2. A willingness to support our commitment to the principles of equal rights and opportunities.

  3. To be able to demonstrate an understanding of charity law and to accept legal duties.

  4. Experience of good governance and risk management processes, or the willingness to attend training to develop these skills.

  5. Confidence and willingness to express your own opinion in order to drive forward the organisation’s aim and objectives.

Desirable Attributes:

  1. To be able to demonstrate acumen and useful connections at local, regional and national level.

  2. Experience of monitoring and evaluating organisational performance.

  3. Expertise in strategic/business planning.

  4. Experience of income generation.

  5. Experience of working in the community or voluntary sector or knowledge of the issues facing bereaved families.

  6. To be able to demonstrate an understanding the importance and purpose of meetings and be committed to preparing for them adequately and attending regularly.

  7. An ability to analyse information and challenge when necessary.

  8. To be able to make collective decisions and stand by them.

  9. An ability to respect boundaries between executive and governance functions.
