Securing the Future for Poppy’s Place
The Story of Poppy’s Place
Poppy’s Place holds a very special place in the heart of Anam Cara Fasgadh. It is more than a haven ~ it is a sanctuary built from love, community, and an unwavering commitment to support families grieving the death of a child.
Our charity, Anam Cara Fasgadh, was founded by Andrew, Susan, Michael & Jenni on 30th May 2018, following the success of cofounder Michael McGuire’s petition (PE01697) calling on the Scottish Government to abolish child funeral fees ~ an achievement that changed lives across Scotland and shaped our mission to support bereaved families with compassion and dignity.
During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, when uncertainty was felt across the world, we made an important decision: to purchase what would become Poppy’s Place, our flagship haven. Through the vision and dedication of our founding directors, Niki Walker and Jenni Morris, and their hardworking team, an extensive refurbishment transformed the space into a calm, beautiful, home-from-home refuge. Poppy’s Place officially opened in May 2022, welcoming families into a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature, reflection, and care.
In February 2025, following discussions with the family-run Tralee Bay team, it was confirmed that the lease for Poppy’s Place will conclude on 31st December 2025. While this news brought sadness, both Anam Cara Fasgadh and the owners of Tralee Bay recognised the profound impact Poppy’s Place has had on the families who stay there. Together, we agreed on a way forward that honours the purpose and legacy of this special sanctuary.
We are now actively seeking a new home for Poppy’s Place—a location that will continue to offer the tranquillity, warmth, and safety that so many families have found there. We trust in the strength of our community—our supporters, partners, and friends—and believe that with your help, the right place will be found. Your ideas, connections, and support are invaluable as we begin this next chapter.
At the same time, we are delighted to share that our second haven, Gabriel’s Oasis, will move into the beautiful space that Poppy’s Place will vacate. Overlooking the fish and duck pond and the peaceful forest beyond, Gabriel’s Oasis will ensure that the serenity of that special corner of Tralee Bay continues to support families in need.
As one chapter evolves and another begins, our mission remains constant ~ to walk beside bereaved families with understanding, compassion, care, and a place of refuge when it is needed most.
Poppy’s Place was created with love ~ and with your help, its legacy will continue in a new sanctuary filled with the same peace and gentleness that families have come to cherish.
