29 Sept 2024 Natasha took on her very first running challenge at Baxter’s Loch Ness Marathon When we asked Natasha what prompted her to take on this challenge, she shared, "Our first born JJ passed away in March 2022 at 24 hours old. We were blessed with the help of some amazing organisations, including Anam Cara Fasgadh. We spent a much needed week at Poppy’s Place in October 2022 remembering JJ. We now have a beautiful and adventurous one year old daughter, Alba, and my husband Arron and I set ourselves the challenge this year of improving our mental and physical health while giving back. The Loch Ness 5K was my first foray (a few months ago I couldn’t have done 1K never mind 5K!!) and I’m delighted to have raised awareness and some vital funds for a very important charity in memory of JJ." Our cofounder Michael first met Iain in 2013 on the bus from Inverness to the Start line in Fort Augustus on a cold and dark September morning. They became great friends through their love of running & Iain pledged to run in memory of Michael’s son Kyle. I work for the NHS in the peri-natel mental health team and Eoin is the delivery manager at McDonald’s. We lost our little boy one year old Albie to Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood in 2023 which of course devastated our whole worlds. Albie was amazing! So fun, loving and very giving. We see ourselves as extremely lucky to have had him. Now through ‘Albie’s Gift’ we try to help out others in many different ways. I see our work with ACF as part of that. I’d love the charity in the Highlands to become known by all who sadly need it as Poppy’s Place offers such a special rest from all the pressures of life. I also hope the Tree of Tranquillity will become an area where parents can find space to remember their loved one and perhaps a sense of community to help on this very difficult journey. There had been no issues throughout the entire pregnancy, but on my very first day of maternity leave we found out that she had died. She was born the following day and she looked so like her big brother. She was absolutely perfect. My background is in childcare, and I studied children’s Learning and Development while my family were young. In 2011, my son Theo died in pregnancy, and it became my mission to raise awareness about infant loss and find ways to support other families like mine. In 2012, my 5th child, Jay, also died in pregnancy. I had never felt so alone and lost at that time. I could see there was a need for more bereavement support and decided to train as a counsellor. I now work in bereavement services, supporting families who have experienced the loss of a baby, child or young person. Over the weekend of Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th April 2025, our brave adventurers set out to conquer the mighty Loch Lomond – Scotland’s most iconic loch – before tackling the towering heights of its most southerly Munro, Ben Lomond. In partnership with our friends at In Your Element, our incredible challengers – Kate, Charis, Noah, and Susan – paddled an exhausting 36.4 km across the loch, before some of them joined Andrew, Lauren, and Steven to take on the steep ascent of Ben Lomond. The weather threw everything it could at them, but our wee team dug deep, battled through the tough conditions, and triumphed. Thanks to their determination and spirit, they raised an amazing £4,122 for Anam Cara Fasgadh! Over 4 days the team battled headwinds and rain to traverse the 95km journey crossing Scotland from west to east, with 22 miles of canal and 4 Lochs - Loch Lochy, Loch Oich, Loch Ness, and Loch Dochfour. Pushed back due to the challenging weather conditions, their fabulous guide Stewart from In Your Element - Scotland made the safety call to have the team complete part of Loch Ness today and a weary but triumphant team finished back at Fort Augustus. It was a challenging yet rewarding adventure that tested both their endurance and spirit. The Challenge was dedicated to Gabriel, who would have turned 4 in 2024. In addition to the walk, their dear friend Hugh May ran the Men's 10K. Hugh’s dedication added another layer of strength to their collective mission, amplifying their shared commitment to this worthy cause. On arrival, families visited our Memorial Tent where they could pin a photo of their child or a message on our remembrance tree and share their child’s name and story with our volunteers and other families. It was a privilege to gather with families in such a sacred space, to honour and remember the children we love and miss so deeply. Being in the presence of others who truly understand this path brought quiet strength and comfort to all of us at Anam Cara Fasgadh. Watching the butterflies take flight ~ each one unique ~ reminded us so powerfully of our children’s individuality and the love that endures beyond their physical presence. One particularly touching moment was Elissa Conway’s butterfly, which stayed with her until the final note of her song. It felt like a gentle reminder: our children stayed as long as they could… and their love never leaves us. We are deeply grateful to MSP Jenni Minto for standing alongside our families, listening with compassion and grace. During the event, each family will release a live butterfly (or butterflies) in memory of their loved ones. When you arrive at our event at 11.45am, you will be invited to visit our Memorial Tent. Here, you can pin a photo of your child to our remembrance tree and share your child’s name and story with our volunteers and other families. This space is a place of connection, reflection, and mutual support, honouring the memory of your precious child in a meaningful way. Our butterflies are lovingly bred in sterile conditions by an award-winning entomologist who is a member of the International Butterfly Breeders Association. Cared for by the expert team at Butterflies for Occasions, in the heart of the New Forest, from the moment they were eggs, these butterflies symbolize hope and love. When the time comes, your butterfly will be gently woken from its hibernation by the warmth of your hands, carrying with it the love and memories of your family as it takes to the wing. The day was hosted by cofounder Susan Simpson, trustee Tracey France, and our Highland ambassadors Catriona Gray and Sara Hearmon. We are so grateful to our amazing volunteers Jane & Aila Hepburn, Lisa Davies, Lorna Murdoch, Jayne Jeffery, Norma Murray, and Megan Urquhart. take flight On Sat 18th May 2024, the Trustees were delighted to return to Dunollie Museum, Castle & Grounds to release butterflies in memory of their children gone too soon. Trustees Andrew, Irene, Tracey and Susan were assisted by volunteers Yvonne & Tayler Robinson, May & Eachann McKenzie, Youth Champions Scott France, Charis & Noah Simpson. Kevin McGlynn captured beautiful images of the event. Singer Suzie Guthrie travelled all the way from Glasgow to sing for us, and composed a song especially for the day called Bluebells. We were also joined by Sophie from Play Prodigy and Lisa from ReLisa Scent. Jim Lynch, leader of Argyll & Bute council, shared how important events like this are to help families see that they are not alone. In 2023 Susan and the Trustees were privileged to host an Anam Cara Fasagadh Butterfly Release in Oban. It was a truly poignant event, bringing over 50 of us together to remember the baby, child or young person whom we could not watch grow up. Though these butterflies look fragile, they are incredibly strong and resilient because they migrate to North Africa each Autumn. That reminds us of what each bereaved family goes through - the fragility of a broken heart but the strength that bereaved families find to keep living without their child. Tea This year, we are honoured once again to gather with bereaved families for the Oban Wave of Light and Evening Tea, in partnership with Miscarriage Support. This year’s service will be held in the beautiful library at the historic Glencruitten House Hotel. Guests are invited to arrive at 6.00pm, with our service beginning at 6.15pm. We are delighted that singer Elissa Conway will once again open our service, creating a space of reflection and comfort. Throughout the evening, we will also hear moving poems read aloud, written by bereaved parents in memory of their precious children. At 7.00pm, we will join with families across the world to light candles in memory of our babies, children, and young people. This moment forms part of the international Wave of Light — a global chain of love and remembrance as bereaved families in every time zone let their candlelight shine. Following the service, Glencruitten House Hotel will provide a scrumptious evening tea for our guests, all at no cost to bereaved families. For those who wish to stay a little longer, we have been warmly invited to relax and enjoy the hotel’s atmosphere — and bar — after the service. We are also very touched that Glencruitten House Hotel are kindly crafting leaves engraved with our children’s names, a special act of remembrance to accompany this year’s gathering. This week supports bereaved parents and families while uniting with others across the world to commemorate babies’ lives and lost pregnancies. The Alliance is committed to raising awareness of pregnancy and baby loss, improving bereavement care, reducing preventable deaths, and ensuring support for all who are grieving. For us, this week is a chance to stand alongside families, to break the silence around loss, and to show that every child’s life, however short, matters deeply. We warmly invite families, friends, and supporters to join us in remembering together — whether by taking part in the Wave of Light on 15 October at 7pm, sharing their baby’s name with us, or simply lighting a candle at home.
